African Gourd-Shaped Wooden Container

Cardiff University

  • This ‘gourd’ is from the British Empire and Commonwealth Collection at the Bristol Museum and Art Gallery. It is from East Africa (probably Kenya) and was most likely used for storing milk products. The museum requested conservation of the object with potential for display.

Gilt Picture Frame

Carmarthenshire County Museum

  • This gilt frame is associated with an oil portrait of James Buckley, c. 1840 in the collection of Parc Howard Museum in Llanelli, Wales (Parc Howard is managed by the Carmarthenshire County Museum). The painting fell from the wall one night, causing damage to both the portrait and the frame. A major project of my summer internship was restoring the frame for return to display. The ornate decoration is Baroque in style, but molded from ‘compo’ (a synthetic resin) – a combination often found in Victorian era frames when it was used to create frames in earlier styles without the cost of hand carving the entire design.

It explored the use of imported glass beads in Africa during the 19th and early 20th centuries. The neck ornament is from South Africa and is undated.
