Ancient Mamertion

Oppido Mamertina, Regio Calabria, Italy

  • Ancient Mamertion (Contrada Mella) is an Italic town site of the Tauraini tribe. It was built following the Second Punic War (about 200 BCE) on an alluvial terrace on the side of the Aspromonte. The town flourished until about 100 BCE. The site was attacked and abandoned between 70 – 50 BCE and later had a Roman Villa built on top of the town site in the early 1st Century CE.
  • Field Supervisor, 1998 Excavation Season (June 15 – July 26)
    • Responsible for opening up a new excavation area and supervising the excavation of 30 square meters. Directed work of a team of three volunteers.
  • Volunteer and Field Registrar, 3 weeks of 1997 Excavation Season (June 16 – July 6)
    • General excavation duties, responsible for labeling small finds in the field, independent work to maintain field inventory notebook.

Jacob’s Well Station

White Pine County, Nevada

  • The Jacob’s Well Pony Express Stop and Stage Coach Station is located in Huntington Valley in Eastern Nevada. It was established in July 1861 and abandoned about 1871. In addition to being a stop on the Pony Express route, the Station was an important stop on both the Overland Stage and a local stage line from Elko to Hamilton.
  • Field School Student, 1996 Session (mid July – mid August)
  • Helped excavate two features and received formal training in archaeological procedures, cleaning and cataloging of finds, surveying and mapping.

Elden Pueblo

Flagstaff, Arizona

  • Elden Pueblo is the site of a prehistoric village with about 60 – 70 rooms belonging to the Sinagua (Sin ah’ wa). It was occupied from about 1150 – 1275 CE. The Hopi call it Pasiovi, which roughly means "Place of Coming Together," and consider it an ancestral site. It was first excavated in 1926 by Dr. Jesse Walter Fewkes of the Smithsonian. Since 1981, excavations have been conducted by the Arizona Archaeological Society and the U.S. Forest Service (Coconino National Forest).
  • Volunteer, 2 weeks of 1996 Excavation Season
  • Trained in basic excavation and artifact analysis skills. Assisted with the excavation of several rooms from a late building phase. Assisted with the stabilization and reconstruction of structural walls.
