Blackware Teapot

Cardiff University

  • This black ware teapot is from The Judges Lodging, a house museum in Presteigne, Wales. This shire hall once served as a residence for visiting judges, as well as housing the courtroom, jail cells, and administrative center for the county of Radnorshire. It is interpreted to the 1860s – including the use of gaslight for illumination. The teapot is undated and the manufacturer is unidentified, with no marks other than a small ‘5’ impressed on the handle. The museum requested that the teapot be restored for display.

Llanelly Teacup

Carmarthenshire County Museum

  • This teacup was produced by the South Wales Pottery (commonly known as Llanelly Pottery) in Llanelli, Wales. The inscription suggests it may be a baby cup or birth memorial, with a manufacture date in 1880 or shortly after. The pottery was established in 1840 and closed in 1922. The wares produced by Llanelly Pottery were decorated either by hand painting or transfer printing and marketed locally. Parc Howard, a house museum in Llanelli which is managed by Carmarthenshire County Museum, has an extensive collection of Llanelly Pottery.

  • This item was privately owned by my grandfather, Olin Neill Emmons (1917–2013). With permission from Mr. Emmons and the Head of the Field Museum Anthropology Conservation Lab, this piece was brought into the Field Museum where it was conserved under the direction of my supervisor. Manufactured by Boehm Porcelain Company, Trenton, NJ (founded in 1949), most likely in the early 1990s.
